HARRISBURG – Reforming school property taxes has been the talk of the General Assembly for decades with numerous proposals put forth. However, mustering the needed votes in the House and Senate for reform has remained elusive.

To update residents of the 92nd and 199th Legislative Districts on efforts in the Capitol, Reps. Dawn Keefer (R-York/Cumberland) and Barb Gleim (R-Cumberland) will host their Property Tax Reform Town Hall Meeting at Monroe Elementary School, 1240 Boiling Springs Road, Boiling Springs, on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 6:30-8 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend.

“We all know the issues with school property taxes: People, mainly older Pennsylvanians on fixed incomes, are being taxed out of their homes,” Keefer said. “This town hall meeting will be a dialogue on the issue, in which Rep. Gleim and I will talk about reform plans and receive residents’ feedback.”

Any property tax reform would be a tax shift, meaning new taxes would have to be created and/or existing taxes would increase to make up for revenue lost by decreased school property tax revenue.

During the town hall meeting, the representatives will discuss the various property tax reform proposals that are being reviewed by members of the General Assembly. Attendees will have the opportunity share their opinions on the proposals.

“I feel it is vital that we fully explore how the tax shift impacts all involved. That is why we also invited the financial managers at Cumberland Valley High School to answer questions from their perspective.” Gleim said.

In addition, Pennsylvania Liberty Alliance President Ron Boltz and Sam Denisco, vice president of government affairs for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, will also be attendance to discuss property tax reform.

There is no need to register to attend in advance. For more information, call Keefer’s office at 717-432-0792.
